Getting into the Swing Of Things

Well, we just finished our official third complete week of school.  I feel like we keep stopping and starting...hurricane days and Labor day...speaking of hurricanes, our school had absolutely no damage from Hurricane Isaac!  Hooray! But I am still keeping our friends to the east of us in my prayers...

Anyway, I put my room back together and I am ready to show y'all some pictures of how it usually looks.

The view from my desk (don't tell Dr. Lauer that I have one!).  I rarely sit here anyway.

The word wall (you can see it peeking out in the first picture)- I write each student's name on a sentence strip and then allow them to decorate it any way that they would like.  Then we put it on the word wall by the first letter in their names.  This is a first day activity.  I believe in adding words to the word wall as the students become familiar with them.  What's the point of putting stuff up that the kids won't use because they don't know what it is?

Our new behavior management system- Ann and I decided to rewrite our system this year to reward the students who always work hard and are well-behaved all the time.  I will have to explain more in another post because it's very detailed...but it works well.

Here are my cubbies. The kids each have one labeled with their name and picture.  They keep all of their work in here, along with their bucket.  What's in the bucket?  Well I'm so glad that you asked!  My kids keep their crayons, scissors, and glue in here.  They pull out the bucket when they need it, and put it away when they don't.  I have rainbow fever this year, so I decided to organize it by color left to right.

One final picture...I learned to make bows this summer, and decided to extend the craft to storage baskets for my classroom.  Here is where I keep all of my read-alouds that go along with the theme or season that we are in.

That's it for now...more pictures later!

Prepping for...Issac!

So it's been a while since either of us have posted anything...it's been a wild and crazy start to the year.  I was planning to post pictures of my classroom, but today I had to prep it for the possibility of flooding and other hurricane-related damage.  So here's what it looks like right now...

The large open area?  That's where my carpet goes.  This is my whole group teaching area.

There's my carpet...on one of the tables.

In March, our school received about 16 inches of rain in about 2 hours or less.  We had a massive flood on our hands!  I had two little puddles in my classroom that day: one inside the back door and one by the air conditioning vent (which is right by the floor).  So I learned from that experience to pick up anything around my back door, which has sandbags outside it also.

Hopefully I will be back soon with pictures of my classroom- set up for the students to use!

Roscoe says "Hello!"  He's our class mascot.

A Little About Me...and Ann

I want to be like Ann Tassin when I grow up.  She is smart, extremely creative, and the most loyal friend you will ever have.  I met Ann five years ago when we started teaching Kindergarten together.  And that was it.  We just connected and have been best teaching buds ever since.  So we decided to write a blog together to document our journey into this thing called Kindergarten. I'm hoping that one day we will have fabulous posts with loads of pictures.  And we will, once we figure out this blogging thing.

So we're the IDK Girls: Ann and Katie.  We will post stuff about Kindergarten, but I'm sure I'll add a little cooking here and there and maybe some craftiness here and there. I'm also looking forward to some feedback from some readers (when we get some). Stay tuned.  I'll be posting some pictures from my classroom sometime soon.

Just beginning

When I grow up, I want to be just like Katie Geiger! She is a fabulous kindergarten teacher.  I have learned so much from her. She is so sweet, organized, neat, consistent....all the things I want to be!  I have my own set of qualities that make us a great team. I can't wait to show everyone what goes on in our kindergarten classrooms. Maybe we'll get Kay and Karen to share some of their ideas, too. They are the other teachers in our grade-level. I like to think of us as the Fabulous Foursome.  Thanks, Katie, for getting us started in the blog world!
